The number of synagogues in Antioch is unknown. Archaeological evidence is non-existent.42 From Josephus we know of at least one that stood in Seleucid times.43 There is no doubt that in the Roman period there existed more than one.44 There was also a synagogue in Daphne45 which, according to Malalas, was the one destroyed in the reign of Vespasian and replaced by a theatre 46 But in the fourth centu ry, besides synagogues in Antioch herself, Chrysostom also mentioned synagogues outside the city, the one in Daphne that presumably replaced the destroyed building, being among them.47
